TEACHER TRAINING ON USING COMPREHENSIVE SEXUALITY EDUCATION TEACHING MATERIALS FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS
On 30 June and 1 July 2026, the Research Center for Inclusion (RCI), in collaboration with Nghe Bằng Mắt (Listen By Eyes), organized a teacher training workshop on using Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) teaching materials for deaf and hard of hearing students. The workshop was conducted under the project “Adaptation and Development of Comprehensive Sexuality Education Materials for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students”, funded by UNICEF.
Strengthening Teachers’ Capacity in Comprehensive Sexuality Education
In her opening remarks, Ms. Tara O’Connell, Chief of Education at UNICEF Viet Nam, highlighted that the teachers’ guide and training workshop were the result of years of collaboration among the Ministry of Education and Training, United Nations agencies, and development partners to strengthen and integrate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) into Viet Nam’s national curriculum.
She also emphasized that this initiative contributes to implementing the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 403 on expanding the Inclusive Education Resource Centre (IERC) network across the country, helping ensure that children with disabilities have equitable access to quality sexuality education.
Ms. Tara expressed her appreciation to the teachers and education managers participating in the workshop for their commitment to inclusive education. She also acknowledged RCI’s continued partnership with UNICEF and commended the organization for expanding the scope of the training beyond the original plan.
Accessible Teaching Materials for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
The workshop brought together 31 teachers from 10 special schools and inclusive education support centers in Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Dien Bien.
During the training, participants learned how to use the adapted Comprehensive Sexuality Education materials, including sign language-integrated educational videos, a teacher’s guide for classroom instruction, and teaching approaches tailored to the learning needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
These resources are expected to strengthen the delivery of Comprehensive Sexuality Education in special schools and inclusive education settings.
Practical Teaching Experience
In addition to theoretical sessions, teachers had the opportunity to practice teaching with deaf and hard of hearing students through interactive activities such as group discussions, games, and role-playing.
A deaf trainer also joined the workshop, providing valuable first-hand perspectives that helped participants better understand the communication needs of deaf learners and improve their classroom practices.
Reflecting on the workshop, Ms. N., Director of the Dien Bien Inclusive Education Support Center, shared: “The language and scenarios presented in the videos are highly appropriate and professional. They demonstrate respect for the audience while reflecting real-life situations. The actors also conveyed the scenarios with excellent facial expressions and performances.”
A teacher from Hai Phong Special School also commented: “Last year, my colleague and I taught a group of deaf students aged 18–20. We really wish we had had access to these videos earlier. The real-life scenarios, combined with teachers’ guidance, would certainly help students develop a much better understanding and gain stronger knowledge.”
Advancing Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities
The training workshop not only introduced teachers to a new set of teaching materials but also strengthened their capacity to deliver Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) for deaf and hard of hearing students.
Through this initiative, RCI and its partners continue to promote inclusive education, ensuring that all children, including children with disabilities, have equal access to the knowledge and life skills they need to grow up healthy, safe, and confident.
